Oscars 2021: Frances McDormand wins Best Actress for role in ‘Nomadland’

Frances McDormand

The Oscars has crowned its 2021 leading lady.

Frances McDormand won the esteemed Best Actress award at Sunday night’s Academy Awards at LA’s Union Station for her role in “Nomadland.”

The actress gave a short but sweet acceptance speech, after howling when “Nomadland” won best picture.

“I have no words my voice is in my sword we know the sword is a work and I like work,” she said.

The actress won out over acclaimed performances by Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”), Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”) and Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”).

Throughout the season, there has been no clear front-runner for best leading lady with nominees neck-and-neck. Unlike “Nomadland,” which has been winning best picture awards all season, the starlets have each scooped up accolades along the way. Day scored the win at the Golden Globes in February, McDormand got top acting honors at the BAFTAs, Davis was victorious at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and, most recently, Mulligan picked up a win at the Independent Spirit Awards. The “Promising Young Woman” star was also named best actress at the Critics Choice Awards in March.

McDormand, 63, is no stranger to award-show glory. The veteran actress possesses two prior Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards, two Emmy Awards and a Tony Award — making her, like her competitor in this year’s award, Viola Davis, one of the few performers to achieve the “Triple Crown of Acting.”

McDormand shined as Fern, a van-dwelling Amazon warehouse-working widow in Chloé Zhao’s masterpiece, which won a 2021 Golden Globe for best dramatic film. The movie has been seen as a juggernaut since it premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film festivals.
